Ursula was the daughter of a king and bethrothed to a pagan prince, who insisted on taking a pilgrimage before they wed. With her ten handmaidens and 11,000 virgins, she traveled to Rome, but upon returning to Cologne she found the city conquered by Huns. Ursula was initially spared because of her beauty, but was eventually killed by Attila.
Ursula often wears royal garments, including a crown. She also often carries a white banner with a red cross and the palm branch of martyrdom. Another of her attriubtes is a boat.
