Michelangelo Buonarroti, Last Judgement (detail of Saint Bartholomew), 1536-1541, fresco, 1370 x 1200 cm, Sistine Chapel, Vatican City

Bartholomew, a disciple of Jesus Christ, preached in India and Armenia.  He was crucified and flayed.

Bartholmew is traditionally depicted in one of several ways:  holding his skin, clothed in a tunic with a book and knife, or as a flayed man.  He often also holds a scroll which reads "Credo in Spiritum Sanctum" ("I believe in the Holy Ghost").
