Denis (also Dionysius) was an Italian bishop sent to preach in Gaul (present-day France). He organized a Christian center in Paris, but was persectuted, imprisoned, tortured, and beheaded. It is said that after he was beheaded, he picked up his head and carried it ten kilometers while preaching a sermon.
