Jacob Jordaens, The Virgin and Child with St. John and his Parents, c. 1617-1618, oil on canvas, 46 x 56.75 cm, North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh

Elizabeth is a cousin of the Virgin Mary and the mother of Saint John the Baptist, despite being at an advanced age when she conceived.  Mary visited her in the sixth month of her preganany, a moment referred to as The Visitation.

She typically appears in one of two scenes:  the Visitation, or at the moment when Saint John first meets the baby Christ, also alongside the Virgin.
