Francis (1181-1226) was a soldier in Assisi who had a vision and converted.  He set off to live an aescetic life, preaching repentance, and founded the Franciscan Order.  In 1224, he received the stigmata on Mount Verna.

A common attribute not seen here is a cross, used as an object of prayer.
