Girolamo da Santacroce, Saint Lawrence, 1520-1530, oil on panel, 42.8 x 32.8 cm, The Courtauld Gallery, London

Lawrence was a deacon to the Pope, and known for giving alms to the poor.  He was arrested after giving church treasure to the poor rather than a prefect, and was tortured over a grill.  Legend states that while he was being tortured, he shouted "Turn me over, I'm done on this side!"

Other attributes of Saint Lawrence include a book and an alms box.  He is also sometimes depicted during his martyrdom.
