unknown (German), Saint Luke Painting the Virgin, 1488, woodcut, 8.9 x 16.1 cm, National Gallery of Art, Washington DC

Luke was a first-century physician in Antioch who converted to Christianity.  He was an Evangelist and wrote the Third Gosepl, as well as the Acts of the Apostles.  He is said to have known the Virgin, and painted the first portrait of her.

There are two main depictions of Luke:  while writing his gospel, or while painting the Virgin.
