Matthew was a Jewish tax collector in Rome, and was called on by Jesus Christ to follow him. He went on to write a Gospel.
Saint Matthew is usually depicted in two ways: being called upon by Jesus (often while counting money), or at work writing the Gosepl. An attribute not seen here is the halberd (a spear-like battle axe) with which he was martyred.
