Narcissus was a bueatiful youth loved by both men and women.  He spurns the nymph Echo, who begs the gods to take revenge.  Her revenge is carried out when Narcissus one days stops to look at his reflection in a pool and cannot look away, eventually dying.  Narcissus flowers bloom in his place.
