One of the Titans defeated by Zeus/Jupiter, Atlas was punished by being made to hold the vault of heaven. He aided Hercules during his labors and stole the Golden Apples of the Hesperides while Hercules held up the heavens, but was tricked by Hercules and had to take the burden back.
